Make Flowers Glow In The Dark (with highlighter fluid and UV light)

we show how to make flowers glow in the dark under ultraviolet light using a fluorescent dye. You really only need two things, an ultraviolet lamp and a fluorescent highlighter. Open the highlighter and squeeze a few drops of the fluorescent ink into a cup of water. Now take the flower (i find white carnations to be the best) and cut the stem underneath the solution. Leave the flower in overnight and the dye will have been absorbed into the flower. Now simply shine an ultraviolet light onto the flower to cause the highlighter dye to glow. whats amazing is that the glow isn't uniform but will glow bighter in areas where the dye accumulates. Often this gives a more complex pattern to the flower. So for valentine's day, give glow in the dark flowers.

So sorry, I accidentally omitted one of the Lante scenes in my initial upload of today's clips. Thank you for pointing it out to me, so I was able to correct it right away. I missed it because it was so dark I guess. GH is incapable of lighting dark scenes. Whenever they turn the lights out, it seems impossible for them to use lighting where you can still see what is going on. Other shows seem to manage it...but not GH...Total dark and gloomy...The whole show today was on the dark side as far as lighting went.....oh well. Lulu arrives at Dante's hospital room dressed in a very pretty red dress and carrying bags of goodies. Little does she know, that Maxie has stuffed one bag with condoms. Dante finds them and this iniates a conversation about when they will do it for the first time. One thing leads to another, and Lulu climbs on the bed, and immediately Dante's machines start beeping as his blood pressure soars. Really cute Lante scenes today...Dark but cute.

St. Valentine is considered the patron saint of lovers and the feast day became a lovers' festival in the 14th century, as an extension of pagan love festivals and fertility rites celebrated in mid-February. Today it is marked by the exchange of romantic cards (valentines), flowers, and other gifts.

Today Valentine's Day is celebrated by showering loved ones with flowers, candies and gifts, while the story behind the St. Valentine remains shrouded in mystery and speculation. One legend contends that Valentine was a democratic Roman priest serving under Emperor Claudius II's rule. Single men were thought to make better soldiers than married men, and thus marriage was outlawed for young men. Disagreeing with this policy, Valentine defied Emperor Claudius by performing marriages for young couples in secret until Claudius discovered this revolt and ordered Valentine to death.

Valentine's Day in ancient Rome was considered to be an important event. The ancient Greeks held celebrations in honor of Juno, the Goddess of Woman and Marriage. The celebration began on February 15th with the feast of Lupercalia. Valentines Day on 14th February is famous for flowers and cards. Roses especially are used to say to your Valentine that you love them. Red, as the symbolic colour of the heart is also especially popular. It is a day when couples the world over express their love to each other.

The day was named after Saint Valentine but there is no agreement on who Saint Valentine himself was and there are three popular stories about a man named Valentine

However, the introduction of flowers for Valentines Day is less contentiously said to have started in the 16th century when the Swedish king Charles II introduced the Persian custom of using flowers to express yourself.

Roses are also the favourite flower of the Greek goddess Venus who is known as the goddess of love. The red rose symbolises love and passion. Other red flowers also symbolise love but not in quite the same way as roses do.

Various colours of rose mean different things. Other than red, romantically linked colours are white for true love, peach, coral or orange for desire, and lilac for love at first sight. Although it is more common for men to send flowers to women, many men also appreciate the gift of flowers.

There are no set rules as what you should give a loved on Valentines Day, but adding a personal touch is nice. This could be including a favourite flower or simply attaching a personal message to the bouquet. One perfect red rose presented with Baby's Breath flower is considered a "signature rose" by florists and is the most desired floral gift for Valentine's Day. A dozen red rose are also a popular gift. Often, roses are more expensive at this time and florists do a large percentage of their business around this day.

Fresh flowers are much more popular than silk ones because hey have a wonderful smell and will always look better than an imitation, although they won't last as long. To preserve fresh roses they can be hung upside down and left to dry.

Every year there is a surge in romantic interest as February, the Month of Hearts, approaches, and the scent of Valentine's Day begins to waft in the air. When it comes to reality, though, how much of that surge is genuinely about romance? Is it not all a commercial exercise designed to rake in the profits?

I do not think anyone can argue that commercial interests contribute greatly to the publicity that surrounds Valentine's Day. You see it everywhere from Christmas onwards; the Valentine's cards, the Valentine's chocolates with their heart shaped boxes and pictures of roses, plus of course all the advertisements for the roses themselves and how you must book early for that Valentine evening meal.

The commercial side of Valentine's can appear so overwhelming you may be persuaded to believe that it is nothing to do with love and romance at all, but purely about making money; that the hearts and the roses are nothing more than artificial symbols of a romantic world that no longer exists.

With much of Western society having a hardened veneer, where underneath relationships fall apart with a puff of wind, and divorce is almost built into marriage, anyone can be forgiven for taking such a cynical view. However, dismissing the whole Valentine Day experience as nothing but commercial is far too simplistic, and to do so is to deny oneself a far richer experience: that of genuine romance and love.

Any commercial venture only succeeds if there is a demand, and Valentine's Day has been a commercial success for many years. Before then, the Valentine's tradition itself had evolved over many centuries, long before commerce became the apparent driving force behind it. So where has the modern demand come from for an event such as Valentine's Day?

Love, attraction, obsession, and romance are as old as the hills, and are integral to the human constitution. While many modern people may claim that they prefer to be alone and do not need anyone else, do not need love and romance in their lives, if they were truly honest with themselves they may say something very different. It is not "macho" to publicly need love, affection and romance, so many hide from their own truth, that they probably yearn for the love of another as much as the most openly romantic.

Others, though, reflect as much desire for romantic love as any man or woman over the centuries, and it is deeply natural to do so. They reflect those desires as they go searching for romantic fiction, love poems and true love stories by the million. If they do have love in their lives as Valentine's Day comes around, then they are well prepared to make the most of it; to indulge in the romantic image with their own twist of reality and desire.

Love and romance have not died and will never die. Valentine's Day Arts And Crafts Projects - "Heart-y Animals," "Mouse Kiss," and more!

For this fun and easy Valentine's Day art project, all that you need is some different colors of construction paper, safety-scissors, glue, and maybe some googly eyes.

First of all, teach your students how to cut out a heart. The best method is to fold a piece of paper in half, and then cut out a slanted "J" shape on the fold. Unfold the paper, and you have a heart! Of course, this is only the beginning of the craft. Have your students cut out as many hearts, of different sizes and colors as they can (to their heart's desire, so to speak).

Now, have your students take those hearts and see what sorts of animals they can make out of them. For instance, students can take lots of small hearts and glue them all together, one on top of the other, in a line (wiggly or straight), and they have a worm. Take two giant hearts (with smaller hearts glued to them for added decoration) and glue the points of the hearts to either side of the "worm," add some antennae, and they have a caterpillar who has just turned into beautiful butterfly.

A heart folded in half makes a great body for a mouse. Two sideways hearts of different sizes, points together make a great body and tail of a fish. Two upside down hearts, one stacked over the point of the other, make a great head and body of a cat, dog, or another animal. Spice up your Valentine's Day crafts with a pair of googly eyes. See what your students can come up with. It is amazing how creative they can be!

Valentine's Day art projects and crafts - VALENTINE'S DAY CARD BOXES

· Friendly box Valentine card holder

o To make this Valentine's Day art project, you need a box (preferably a shoe box or a box of that size), some colored construction paper, cardboard, scissors, and some glue.

o Have an adult cut a clot in the box lid for the Valentine's Day cards to be inserted through, and then wrap up the box in colored paper.

o Cut out an animal's head and shoulders from the construction paper and glue it to the piece of cardboard. Add a fun face to the animal. Now glue the animal to the back of the box, with the face facing towards the front.

o Gut out some arms for your animal and have them wrap around the box, so it looks like your animal is holding or hugging the box.

· Paper plate Valentine card holder

o You need: two paper plates, a hole punch, yarn, and markers.

o To make this Valentine's Day craft, first decorate the bottoms of your paper plates how ever you want.

o Next, put your two paper plates together (tops facing in).

o Take your hole punch and punch holes every inch or so along the edges of the paper plates for ¾ the circumference of the paper plates.

o Take the yarn and weave it in and out of the holes, "sewing" the two plates together.

o The slot left at the top is where the Valentines can be inserted.

Valentine's Day art projects and crafts - POEM PUZZLE

Have your students cut out a large heart from a piece of heavy paper. Next, have them write a fun Valentine's Day poem on the heart for one of their classmates. Have them decorate the heart however they want. Then, have them cut up their hearts into 10 or so puzzle pieces and give the heart to a classmate and have them put it together. This is a fun idea for a Valentine's Day card, as well.

Valentine's Day art projects and crafts - MOUSE KISS

This is a fun, cute, and sweet Valentine's Day craft. Have your students cut out a small pink heart, then glue 2 Hershey kisses to the heart, one on each side. The top of the heart makes the mouse's hears. Leave in the Hershey kiss paper in the back heart to act as the tail. Take it out of the front Hershey kiss. Use a very small pom pom to glue on as the nose, with thread whiskers beneath it. Glue googly eyes on either side of the nose. Voila! You have a mouse kiss. Just be careful with the glue - do not use much and make sure that glue touches only the tin foil and not the chocolate. Messy mice should only be looked at and not eaten.

Easy Valentine Treats to Take to School

With Valentine's Day right around the corner, considering making some easy Valentine's snacks that the little ones can bring to school? Whether you are preparing them for your own child's lunch or as a special treat for the class, here are some snacks that are easy to transport and easy for the little ones to devour once they dig in!

Marshmallow-Popcorn Hearts are a simple alternative to popcorn balls. With this recipe, you can skip the Karo syrup and just melt some marshmallows instead! This quick and easy recipe works just like Rice Krispie bars, only with popcorn instead!

Here's what you need to get started:

o 10 cups popped popcorn
o 3 tablespoons margarine or butter
o 1 10-ounce package regular marshmallows
o Red food coloring
o Red colored sugar

Directions

o Put the popped corn (minus the unpopped kernels) into a 13 x 9 x 2 inch baking pan and keep it warm in your 300 degree oven.
o Melt the butter/margarine and marshmallows in a large kettle or in the microwave. (Microwave: 1 ½ to 2 minutes, stirring once) Stir the mixture until it is smooth, no lumps, and then add the red food coloring.
o Stir in the popped popcorn- about half at a time.
o Wait 10 minutes or so until it is cool enough to handle.
o Grease individual heart shaped pans with butter.
o Press the popcorn mixture into the greased pans.
o Cool the popcorn hearts. Remove from pans. Sprinkle each with red colored sugar.
o Wrap each individually in plastic wrap- pink or red finishes it off nicely.
o Makes 9 hearts.

This one is a little messy, but for an extra-special treat, exceptions can be made to almost any rule. Take along a pre-packaged wet napkin in a zippered plastic bag to assist in quick clean-up.

Candy Apple or Caramel Apple Valentines

1 bag of caramels
1 pack of craft sticks (like popsicle sticks)
1 bag of apples or your choice
wax paper
cake decorating tool
Flavored icing

Melt the caramels or hard candy according to the package directions. Insert a craft stick into one end of each apple. Dip the apple into the melted caramel, covering it completely. Lift the apple and let it drip for a few seconds and then set it on the wax paper until completely set- about two hours) Use your cake decorating tool (or a plastic bag with a hole in the corner and a decorating tip) to write a nice message on each apple. Wrap in plastic wrap and secure the wrap at the top of the apple with a rubber band, leaving the stick exposed as a handle.

Finally, you can mix up these peppermint stars from a quick meringue batter. They make a tasty little treat that travels well in a lunch.

Peppermint Stars
Makes: 45 cookies
Prep: 30 minutes
Bake: 15 minutes

Ingredients
o 2 egg whites
o 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
o 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar
o 1/2 cup sugar
o 1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract
o Red food coloring (optional)

Directions

1. Place egg whites in a medium mixing bowl; let stand at room temperature for 30 minutes.
2. Line two large cookie sheets with brown paper or foil; set aside.
3. Add vanilla and cream of tartar to egg whites. Beat with an electric mixer on medium to high speed until soft peaks form (tips curl). Gradually add sugar, 2 tablespoons at a time, beating until stiff, glossy peaks form (tips stand straight) and sugar dissolves. Quickly beat in peppermint extract. Tint pink with several drops of red food coloring, if desired.
4. Using a pastry tube with a large star decorating tip, pipe cookies onto prepared cookie sheets (form cookies about 1-1/2 inches in diameter). Bake in a 300 degree F oven for 15 minutes. Turn off oven and let cookies dry in oven with door closed about 30 minutes. Remove from cookie sheets. Cover and store in a dry place. Makes 45 cookies.
